The fast-paced action of OS combat systems is an exciting concept, one that my current group will not yield to after years of over-powered 4e videogame-esque PCs. Do you ever think the contemporary D&D audience will embrace it?Steven Jhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10057323960845111471noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-549940298295825812.post-26489225370403367292012-05-12T13:39:19.280-06:002012-05-12T13:39:19.280-06:00Just saying that I dig your page, will follow.Just saying that I dig your page, will follow.Tom Badguyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00450994667840450480noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-549940298295825812.post-73732821419540973612012-05-09T12:04:35.421-06:002012-05-09T12:04:35.421-06:00Wow, that's a great article. Thanks for the pointer.

As I'm playing a hacked 4E right now, we do use the battle mat (a dry-erase Paizo GameMastery mat), but I try to map out more than just the combat encounters, to keep them guessing. I have also played around with the idea of turning over battle mat duty to a player just like how they need to keep their own map.

I find the part of the battle mat that competes with imagination is more the grid than the drawing. I may try to run my game gridless but still with the battle mat and see how it works (I'm not a fan of the explicit numerical tradeoffs that using the grid encourages).Necropraxishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12716340801054739658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-549940298295825812.post-53620226453240209202012-05-09T08:21:11.630-06:002012-05-09T08:21:11.630-06:00I didn't know he did one with Wil Wheaton--too...I didn't know he did one with Wil Wheaton--too kewl! I did catch the on with Bob Salvatore and Ed Greenwood. Ed rocks! he is my kind of gamer. A littel saucy too :)

Thanks for the heads up Malik, and thanks for stopping by--always good to hear from you.Sizzaxehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13715649618278080709noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-549940298295825812.post-5457363409554977252012-05-08T23:35:14.387-06:002012-05-08T23:35:14.387-06:00I don't if you are aware already but there are...I don't if you are aware already but there are videos on youtube of the 'celebrity' games Chris Perkins runs at conventions ( I forget which one) with Wil Wheaton, the guys from Penny Arcade and Scott Kurtz. Obviously as they are played in front of an audience there is an element of playing to the crowd, but they're fairly entertaining to watch.

Anyway, I enjoyed reading this. I gotta say, I agree with pretty much all your opinion on map-use too.Malikhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00963296511881431115noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-549940298295825812.post-39310006778565806352012-05-08T22:45:37.642-06:002012-05-08T22:45:37.642-06:00Yeah, that's true. I have had players ask me to get the minis out to help them "see" what was going on. I try to accomodate them when they make such requests--even if I prefer a different approach. It may not be my descriptions at fault but just that they "see" things in a different way than I do.

BTW, good to hear from you again Alexander!Sizzaxehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13715649618278080709noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-549940298295825812.post-73222803755662009812012-05-08T17:17:01.192-06:002012-05-08T17:17:01.192-06:00Some folks are more visual or think in more spatia...Some folks are more visual or think in more spatial terms.
