Growing my Hackmaster 4E Library

Classic stuff to say the least. Though I'm just barely scratching the surface of the PHB, and about a third of the way through the Garweze Wurld Gazetteer--I'm loving it. I simply love the feel of these books and this game. It's the KODT magic bottled and ready for genie release. And I do me one helluva genie! There's power in these here tomes my gaming friends. I highly recommend checking them out.

Why exactly? When the game is really an alternate 3rd edition of Dungeons & Dragons? Well, because it is THE 3rd edition of Dungeons & Dragons. And it's more than that. You know how, when you see or experience or hear something that you just can't quite put into words? That's what this game is like for me. It's just got something. It appeals to something in me that really hearkens back to the days when I began gaming.

What this magical something is exactly I'm not sure. But as I set the PHB down this afternoon after a short reading session I pondered what it was. Standing there staring into the middle distance Elric-like, it came to me. Hackmaster 4e makes me feel special. It makes me feel a part of something almost secret, like I've been admitted to a long hidden cabal, and shown the doorway to a marvelous and magical kingdom that few know about. It was the same feeling I had when I first began pulling the AD&D 1e books off the shelves some 30 years ago.

Not sure I'm explaining it well, but let's just say that HM4e has got the magic, and got it in spades.

So far I landed the PHB, GMG, HoB 1-8, GW Wurld Gaz, and Atlas. And I'm ordering more asap. I'll be reviewing each one and making the case for keeping this classic alive and well.

  1. Pick up Kenzer's B1 and B2 and you'll have enough info for a good campaign through levels 1 to 5(roughly) with a good jumping off point to go further...

But yea, HM4 is a sweet game.

  2. Thanks Greylond. I'm planning on acquiring all the HM4 modules eventually; so those will be first on my list. I geuss the worst part about it all is that Kenzer isn't supporting it anymore. I mean HMb is a good game, but I geuss HM4 is more like my old 1e on steroids.

    Thanks for reading.

  3. You need to come on over to the K&Co forums. K&Co might not be Officially supporting it anymore but there are still a lot of us still playing it and you can find a lot of help/advice on the game. Also, we've got people from all over on the boards so you might be able to find someone near you.
